Message from the Head teacher
Welcome to our 13th news-letter it is always an honor to be accorded a chance to contribute .This year I am pleased to inform you that positive strides have been realized to make our school even better.
In education, we managed to beat schools in our division where we merged the top with a mean mark of 340 marks. Seven out of twenty-one pupils joined National schools. I must congratulate my staff for their hard work and dedication to the school. Without them, we would not be where we are. We are optimistic we shall perform better in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.
Our effort as a school con-tinues to be a force to reckon in the community around, I must report that in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education our old boys and girls portrayed good foundation we managed to take 10 students to different university, out of this four were sponsored pupils. These boys and girls were mentored by KAG School; we aim to do much more and to have more students in the universities in the future.
Education without play is not a good education, with co-curricular activities again this year two of our pupils(Ali Dora and Mariam Kassim) travelled all the way to the lake side (Kisu-mu) not only to represent KAG School but also the coast region, what an honour! They did not let us down where they emerged in position four and two respectively national wide. Congratulations to all the teachers for their support, as the Kiswahili saying goes”Umoja ni Nguvu utengamano ni udhaifu” literally meaning together we stand divided we fall.
On the infrastructure this year, we started boarding facilities that gave the pupils a conducive environment for their studies. I thank the school board management for the support. Pupils were upbeat about it and the reception was very good where all classes seven and eight enrolled in the program. I also thank the parents who gave us support in the new facilities that were long overdue.
I must thank our sponsors who are ever ready and willing to take the school to greater lengths. Thanks to the leadership of Rosemary and Jim. This year we were able to fence the school compound and the school properties are safe. To our sponsors who work tirelessly to see the school progress thanks a lot and as I wrote in the last Africa fayre the mark, you left will never be erased or forgotten in generations to come.

Welfare department
Our school’s welfare deals with the teacher and pupil’s welfare. This includes Food Benevolence ie in times of happiness e.g. weddings, baby showering and in times of sorrow e.g. funeral
As a department, we took leadership as from the year 2014 having three members in charge as follows:Madame Rose Pius – assistant head of department
As a department, we are happy to say that we have progressed so well despite the challenges here and there.

Boarding department
The boarding section started on 5th May of the year 2015. Classes 7 & 8 are accommodated in school as boarders. A few pupils from other classes have also joined boarding. The boarders are 51 in total –both boys and girls.
The teachers really worked very hard in campaigning for this boarding to the pupils in which the turnout was 100%. The girls’ dormitories are within the school compound near the tuition area while the boys’ dormitories are located in the nursery section.
Despite the few challenges that the boarding section is undergoing e.g. high prices of food and inadequate boarding facilities, the pupils are really enjoying and benefiting as they have
ample time to study
So far, the school is progressing well with the boarding and we are anticipating for more pupils to join come next year. We thank the school administration for establishing the boarding program. Mr. George

Scouts/girl guides
The scouts club started with 15 members i.e. both boys and girls. The patron of the club was called John Mweledi. In the year 2009, Mr. George took over the patron. The club was very active whereby they used to go to camps and participated in vari-ous competitions with different schools
In the year 2013, the Girl Guide club was introduced in the school and in the same year, the club registered 36 members- it was led by Madam Rose as their patron. Almost all members were active and they used to attend the camps and participated in many activities. I want to acknowledge and thank the scout sponsors for buying uniforms for both scouts and girl guides. This motivated the mem-bers and even the other pupils. This also attribut-ed to more pupils joining the clubs. For now, there are 36 scout members and 64 girl guides. The two clubs are faring on well.
Our expectation as club patrons, is to make sure that we help these little boys and girls achieve their dream as scouts and urge the school admin-istration for more support and cooperation

Bible club
On behalf of the scripture union, I would like to reg-ister my appreciation to all the members of KAG fraternity for the contin-ued support toward the club that has enabled us to mentor our pupils both intellectually and spiritu-ally.
Our club is currently very active as we hold pupils rallies and fellowships on termly basis in many different parts of our county Kwale. This also gives our pupils an opportunity to interact with pupils from different schools.
May the lord be with you all because everyone for himself and God for us all.

Music and drama club
The club is doing well each year. It is very active, as it has taken pupils up to national level. This year it managed again to take some pupils to na-tional music festival where they competed perfectly.
Our sincere gratitude goes to the administration for their continued support towards the betterment of the club.
However, the club is short-lived by lack of necessary music and drama attires that makes it difficult to compete effectively at higher levels.
On behalf of the club, I sincerely thank everybody for their continued and tireless effort towards this club.

STORY TIME
Before several centuries, there was a very large, dense and dark forest. A group of monkeys arrived at the forest.
It was during a cold season, and the monkeys struggled hard to survive the freezing cold nights. They were hunt-ing for fire to get warm.
One night, they saw a firefly and considered it a dab of fire. All the monkeys in the group shouted ‘Fire, Fire, Fire, Yeah we got fire!’ A couple of monkeys tried to catch the firefly and it es-caped. They were sad, as they could not catch the fire. They were talking to themselves that they could not live in the cold if they did not get the fire.
The next night, again they saw many fireflies. After several attempts, the mon-keys caught a few fireflies. They put the fireflies in a hole dug in the land and tried to blow the flies. They blew the flies very hard without knowing the fact that they were flies! An owl was watching the activities of the monkeys. The owl reached the monkeys and told them, ‘Hey those are not fire! They are flies. You will not be able to make fire from it! ‘The monkeys laughed at the owl.
One monkey replied the owl, ‘Hey old owl you don’t know anything about how to make fire. Do not disturb us! ‘The Owl warned the monkeys again and asked them to stop their foolish act. ‘Monkeys, you cannot make fire from the flies! Please hear my words.’
The monkeys tried to make fire from the flies. The Owl told them again to stop their foolish act. ‘You are struggling so much, go take your shelter in a nearby cave. You can save yourself from the freezing cold! You won’t get fire!’ One monkey shouted at the owl and the owl left the place. The monkeys were simply doing the foolish activity for sev-eral hours and it was almost midnight.
They were very tired and realized that the words of the owl were correct and they were trying to blow a fly. They sheltered them-selves at the cave and es-caped from the cold.
Lesson leant:
We may go wrong many times and should seek and accept the advice / sugges-tions provided by others

THE AKAMBA COMMUNITY
The Kamba people are a Bantu ethnic group who live in the former Eastern Province of Kenya stretching from Nairobi to Tsavo and north up to Embu County, Kenya. This land is called Ukambani that constitutes of Makueni County, Kitui County and Machakos County.
They are closely related Kikuyu, Embu, Mbeere and Meru
They are believed to have reached their present Mbooni Hills stronghold in the Machakos District of Kenya in the second half of the 17th century.
Just Like all other Bantu, communities, the Akamba have a story of origin. It goes like; "In the beginning, Mulungu (God) created a man and a woman. This was the couple from heaven and he proceeded to place them on a rock at Nzaui where their footprints, including those of their livestock can be seen to this day.
These were the initiators of the ‘spirits clan’- the Aimo. It so happened that the couple from heaven had only sons while the couple from the anthill had only daughters. Naturally, the couple from heaven paid dowry for the daughters of the couple from the anthill.
The family and their cattle greatly increased in numbers. With this prosperity, they forgot to give thanks to their creator. Mulungu punished them with a great famine. This lead dispersal as the family scattered in search of food.
Some became the Kikuyu, others the Meru while some remained as the original people, the Akamba." The Akamba are not specific about the number of children that each couple had initially
Sources vary on whether they are the third, fourth or the fifth largest ethnic group in Kenya. They speak the Bantu Kikamba language as a mother tongue. The Kamba are based in Machakos, Kitui and Makueni Counties of Kenya.

The Akamba were originally Long distance traders, but later adopted agriculture due to the availability of the new land that they came to occupy.
Today, the Akamba are often found engaged in different professions: some are agriculturalists; others are traders, while others have taken up formal jobs. The Akamba who straddled the eastern plains of Kenya also practiced barter trade with the Kikuyu, Maasai, Meru and Embu people in the interior and the Mijikenda and Arab people of the coast.

The Akamba people's love of music and dance is evidenced in their spectacular performances at many events in their daily lives or on occasions of regional and national importance. In their dances, they display agility and athletic skills as they perform acrobatics and body movements.
Currently the Kamba community has prominent leaders in Kenya such as Willy Mutunga (the chief Justice), and Alfred Mutua (Machakos governor) Kalonzo Musyoka (the former vice president)

Message from Rosemary
Dear Kenyan friends and Sponsors,
How time flies, especially when you get older! It is difficult to believe that it is 16 years since my friends in Emley and Jim and I, started raising money to build a Nursery School in Msambweni Kenya. After this had been built, the fundraising extended to building a Primary School, office block and recently a community library. We have also provided many boxes of books and items of equipment for the school over the many years. The sponsorship of poorer children in the school started 14 years ago and now we have not only children at KAG School, but also some at secondary schools and even four at university. This is a fantastic result, all due to the hard work of Mr. Harrison Kamere and his dedicated teachers. I am immensely proud and thank very much all our supporters who, with their sponsorship, have enabled this grand achievement.
In the beginning, we all planned on no more than 5 years fund raising. It is therefore with a mixture of joy and sadness that all good things have to end. The fundraising team after 16 years is now having a well-earned rest. We will not be raising large sums of money in the future and hope that the parents of pupils in the school and members of the KAG church will continue to support any future needs of the school. All our team are well into retirement and our oldest helper is in her 80’s. Others are not in good health. We are very thankful for their hard work over so many years.
We will carry on with the sponsorship programme and equipping the library with books and hopefully still continue to visit Kenya frequently.
Thank you for your love and support over the years. We treasure all the wonderful friends we have made in your lovely country.

Fundraising for 16 years to build the school and library has not been easy, and has involved a great deal of hard work and dedication by Rosemary Dilys and their team of volunteers.
Throughout this period, I have been a member of Horbury and Ossett Phoe-nix Rotary club (‘the club’), without whose help the project would not be where it is today. It has given a great deal of financial support over the years, and several club members have visited the school, taken part in teaching both in the classroom, and also in outdoor activities such as cricket. Some have visited more than once.
In the early days, the club provided desks, first aid equipment, and textbooks. For several years after that, funds were provided to purchase large impregnated mosquito nets, to enable every child, and very often their parents and siblings, to be protected at night.
The next project was to provide blackboards, benches, and a complete new concrete floor for the daub and wattle community room at Tumbe (the village whose inhabitants have been treated and cured of leprosy). This enabled the setting up of basic primary education for the many adults who had never had the opportunity to go to school.
In recent years, the club has supported a new toilet block, septic tank water tank and piped water supply.
3years ago the head teacher became very concerned that many children were arriving at school hungry after a long walk, having had no breakfast ,and very little at home the previous evening. These children were not surprisingly lethargic and inattentive, clearly not gaining from their educa-tion, but improving after a lunch of Ugali and cabbage! The breakfast club was therefore started for some of the poorest chil-dren, after a further donation from the club. A bowl of sweet maize porridge is supplied, and although not entirely to our taste, the children love it, and this is being currently supported from charity funds.
On completion of the library, the club provided further funds for the set-ting up of a computer room, with the provision of furniture and recondi-tioned computers, and training for the teachers. This has been very well received and the children now have access to IT les-sons. More recently, further funds were provided to enable internet connection that should happen in the New Year. We took out an old laptop, which was fitted with a modem also paid for by Rotary so the children can now learn about emailing.
We are very grateful to the club for all this sup-port, and suitable small notices have been erected at the school as a reminder of this to all.
